It is generally safe to put bleach in the fabric softener dispenser of your washing machine. Bleach-based solutions work well to control and remove mildew, as do vinegar-based solutions. For front-loading washers, add 2 cups white vinegar to the bleach dispenser. Most likely any bleach you add before starting the dishwasher is gone by the first rinse. Using white vinegar you buy in a store is not a risk at all.
